Sister Mary Ellen (formerly Catherine Maytum) was a Sister of Mercy for 75 years. Sister Ellen led a busy and dedicated life as a teacher in Rhode Island. She became a certified reading specialist to expand her service to her students. Sister’s talents were recognized when she was appointed principal of St. Timothy School in Warwick, a position she held for 12 years.
Spurning the idea of retirement, Ellen became a pastoral minister in St. Joseph’s Parish in Providence, Rhode Island. Here she served anyone who called upon her, but the infirm and the elderly held a special place in her heart. Sister was forced by ill health to retire in her early nineties. Sister Ellen will be remembered by the countless people with whom and to whom she ministered.
