A woman with a big heart who always thought of others, Sister Clare was generous and kind.
Henrietta Clare graduated in the first class from Mercy High School, San Francisco, California, where she came to know the Sisters of Mercy. After graduation, she entered the Sisters of Mercy in Burlingame, California, at the age of 18.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of San Francisco in California and a certificate in early childhood education from Cañada College in Redwood City, California.
For 23 years, she served as a bookkeeper and local treasurer for several ministries as well as the former Burlingame Regional Community. For the next 15 years, she ministered as a preschool teacher at St. Matthias Day Care in San Mateo, California.
She served for 12 years in marketing/admission at Mercy Retirement and Care Center in Oakland, California. At the same time, she became very active at a local quilt store. She and her friends solved many world issues as they selected fabrics and created beautiful works of art. She very much enjoyed brightening the lives of the residents with her handwork. Her quilts remain as a reminder of those relationships and her life with God.
