Age 93
Sister Barbara Hunt, RSM, lived her motto, “To Jesus through Mary,” and will be remembered for her enthusiasm and energy engaging students in the learning process.
At the age of 18, Sister Barbara entered the Sisters of Mercy in Cumberland, Rhode Island. She earned a degree in education from Catholic Teachers College in Providence, Rhode Island. Barbara ministered as an elementary school teacher for over 50 years in the Providence, Rhode Island, and Fall River, Massachusetts dioceses. During this time, she taught second grade for nine years at the Cathedral School in Fall River, Massachusetts, her family’s parish and school where she was a student.
Upon retiring from her educational career, Barbara became a pastoral care minister at Holy Name, Sacred Heart parish in New Bedford, Massachusetts. She helped people prepare rituals, brought Eucharist, and often just engaged in conversation. Anyone who knew her would attest to her love of talking but, more importantly, she knew how to listen.
