The central theme of the entire Bible is one of reconciliation. The Greek word, which has been translated as “reconciliation” means “change” or “exchange,” which refers to a change in the status of a relationship. Sin separated humans from God, establishing a need for reconciliation.

A Prayer of Preparation

“Jesus, through the power of your love, you have given us the courage, wisdom, and strength to share our gifts and talents in humility.

In peace and understanding we reconcile with each other.

Creator Spirit, we come together in prayer and thanksgiving for the many blessings we have received. Allow your Spirit to wash over us and give us strength to walk together as one.”

A Reading from Ephesians

“Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you” (Ephesians 4:31–32, NIV).

Reflection Questions

  1. Do you feel the need to reconcile with the Lord?
  2. How has sin separated you from God?
  3. How have you been reconciled in the past? Did you feel forgiven?
  4. Can you find examples of reconciliation in the Bible?
  5. Can you find a way to be compassionate to someone today?

Activity

Be compassionate to someone today and help them before they ask. Offer to hold a door, carry a bag, make a phone call; anything that lightens someone else’s burden.

The practice of peace and reconciliation is one of the most vital and artistic of human actions.
