Age 89
As we gently present the beautiful soul of Sr. Mary Corde Somma to her creator, we recall with love her presence among us.
How blessed were the students she taught at Bishop McDonnell Memorial High School in Brooklyn, New York; Mater Christi High School in Astoria, New York; Our Lady of Mercy Academy in Syosset, New York; and Catherine McAuley High School in Brooklyn. For 48 years she taught not only her specialty, music, but also how to live as a follower of Jesus.
A loving daughter of Ernestina and Pasquale Somma, she was fond of recalling stories of her childhood days at Sacred Heart Parish and Mercy Juniorate High School.
Corde sister was also a Sister of Mercy, Mary Mercedes. Corde brought joy to those with whom she lived and enhanced their lives with her musical talent. She conducted many “sing-alongs” at her most recent home in Whitestone, New York, as well as played for daily liturgies.
Corde’s life was filled with prayer, kindness, love of family, community and Italian food. She loved being a Sister of Mercy and was devoted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
We hold Corde in our memories, which is sure to bring smiles to our lips. Rest now in the peace Jesus promised you for a life well lived.
