Sister Luz-Eugenia Alvarez made her profession of temporary vows on October 15 in the chapel of Mercy Circle in Chicago, Illinois. Luz-Eugenia entered the Sisters of Mercy in September of 2020. Her mother, Cecilia, and sister, Patricia, joined with several cousins, the Institute Leadership Team and Sisters of Mercy from Chicago and across the United States to witness the profession.

The celebrant, Rev. Gerardo R. Carcar, began the bilingual Mass by telling those assembled: “[Today] is a day of consecration, a day where we are in the presence of our God, and we are going to say again, ‘yes, you are calling me and I am going to answer yes.’”

During her Instruction on the Vows, Sister Joy Clough noted the themes of awe and mercy in the readings Luz-Eugenia chose. Joy reflected, “God’s mercy is awesome. That’s not a doctrinal or theoretical statement for Luz-Eugenia. It’s lived experience.”
