Age 84
Sister Janice brought her prayer life, compassion, gentleness, and generosity into her ministries in education, business, nursing, and volunteering.
Janice entered the Sisters of Mercy in Manchester, New Hampshire, at the age of 20 after
employment as the secretary to the president of St. Anselm College, Manchester New Hampshire.
She held a bachelor’s degree in business education from Mount St. Mary College in Hooksett, New Hampshire, and a master’s degree in business education from Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts. She graduated as a nurse from Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Medford, Massachusetts.
Her early ministry was teaching secretarial courses at the former Castle Junior College in Windham, New Hampshire. Following 11 years as an instructor at Castle College, Sister Janice served as director of activities of the Frances Warde Center in Windham, New Hampshire, and then as the finance officer, then treasurer of the local community. From 1987 through 1996, Sister Janice was the comptroller of Marian Court College, Swampscott, Massachusetts. She also served on the board of trustees of Catholic Medical Center and the reconciliation board of the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas.
In 1996, Sister Janice pursued a ministry in health care. She worked as a registered medical/surgical nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and as an assistant director of nursing at Warde Senior Living. Upon retirement, Sister Janice volunteered as a child caregiver at the Manchester Immigration Project and as an advocate/preceptor with the New Hampshire Long-Term Ombudsman Program. Sister Janice, along with her faithful friend, Sister Janice Turner, who is now deceased, volunteered for years at the Boston Marathon.
