Age 94

An avid storyteller, Sister Loraine often recounted experiences that revealed her deep compassion for people in need, especially her students.

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, she entered the Sisters of Mercy there at the age of 20. She received a bachelor’s degree in English from Our Lady of Cincinnati and a master’s degree in education from Xavier University, both in Cincinnati.

She ministered for 26 years as an elementary school teacher and principal in Cleveland, Piqua, and primarily Cincinnati, Ohio. She never hesitated to address situations that needed attention, sometimes even bringing about systemic change, while tending to the individual needs of students.

For 23 years, she served as the director of communications for the Sisters of Mercy, Cincinnati Province and South Central Regional Community. Mid all the heavy responsibilities of her role, Sister Loraine, gifted in writing, created the InkLinks newsletter to connect sisters across the community in the U.S. and Jamaica.

When visiting Jamaica, she once gave a St. John Bosco student the shorts she was wearing. This kind of generosity was right up Loraine’s alley. She will be remembered for her compassion, generosity, appreciation of others, wild sense of humor, lively stories, upbeat spirit, and deep love for her community, family, and her God.
