Age 95

Sister Marjorie, an extraordinary woman, touched so many lives in such a deep way. Her vocation as a Sister of Mercy was the overarching joy and purpose of her life. A woman of deep faith and love for God, her mantra was, “God is a loving, caring God.”

After attending Mother of Mercy High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, at the age of 19, she entered the Sisters of Mercy in Cincinnati, Ohio. She earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Our Lady of Cincinnati and a master’s degree in hospital administration from Xavier University, both in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Initially a nurse at the former Mariemont Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, within two years she was appointed their director of nursing. She also served as director of nursing at Mercy Hamilton Hospital, then in administration at Our Lady of Mercy Mariemont, both in Cincinnati. For six years she served as area coordinator for the former Sisters of Mercy province of Cincinnati, Ohio, and then was elected as provincial of that community for a six-year term.

After serving in community leadership, she ministered for one year as chief executive officer for Mercy Hospital Mariemont and Anderson in Cincinnati. In 1988 she became a vice-president of the Mercy Health System in the areas of systems development, advocacy in government relations, outreach and community services. She served in this capacity until 2013. She also served on numerous boards for the Mercy Health System and other health systems and volunteered at the Mercy Health home office. She received various awards for her work in health care. In retirement, she belonged to two card clubs that meant monthly, enjoyed an occasional visit to the casino and her annual two weeks’ vacation in Florida. She never availed herself of a sabbatical, so during her retirement years each morning was a sabbatical moment.
