Age 90
A true Sister of Mercy, Sister Mary Anton’s quiet compassion and heart of mercy were shared generously and humbly throughout her ministries as an educator, pastoral care provider and volunteer.
Born and raised in Egg Harbor, New Jersey, Sister Mary Anton entered the Sisters of Mercy after high school graduation at the age of 18 in Watchung, New Jersey. She earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Georgian Court University in Lakewood, New Jersey. For over 40 years, she taught junior high and high school in the Camden, Metuchen and Trenton, New Jersey dioceses.
Next, Sister Anton transitioned to pastoral care. Her service at St. Mary Residence for Women in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, became a highlight of her twilight years. She reached out to others with a warm inviting welcome and assisted their family members when challenging situations arose, providing an advocate’s calming voice and caring solution.
During her retirement years at the Convent of Mercy, in Merion, Pennsylvania, Anton was selfless in her service as a driver and known as an entertaining storyteller. In her final days at McAuley Convent, Anton remained faithful to God’s will for her, accepting care from others with a positive and grateful attitude.
