Age 78
Sister Anne responded to the call to service in mercy through her dedication to the health care ministry, her passion for justice, and her commitment to the Critical Concern of care for Earth.
She entered the Sisters of Mercy in Dobbs Ferry, New York, at the age of 20. After graduating from Cornell University School of Nursing in Ithaca, New York, Anne lovingly served the sick and suffering, as a nurse practitioner representing the face of Mercy for over 30 years in hospitals and healthcare centers in New York. For 18 months, she served on leadership for the former New York regional community and as the administrator of St. Vincent de Paul residence in the Bronx, New York, for four years.
For the next 20 years, Anne shared her nursing expertise and experience and her desire to witness mercy and justice to those in need in the Philadelphia area. A prayerful woman of mercy, Anne reached out to be the heart and hands of Christ for others in any way possible. Always conscious of the needs of others, Anne was an advocate not only for the ill but also for the homeless and the aged. She comforted the elderly with home visits, educating and nurturing them with sensitivity and deep respect.
In her final hours, she reminisced about her various ministries with the sisters accompanying her, grateful for God’s fidelity and goodness. A group of 15 hospital nurses gathered at her bedside minutes before Anne took her final breath, placed a lantern pin on her, and together offered the Nightingale Pledge. A true daughter of Catherine McAuley, Anne is now with God for time and eternity!
