Age 70
Sister Madeline Mary’s empathy and deep spirituality was rooted in her unwavering faith in the God of Mercy and was expressed as love lavishly poured out to others.
Born in the Bronx, Sister Madeline was a graduate of the State University of New York in Brockport with a bachelor’s degrees in education and physical education. She also held master degrees in education from Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, social work from Fordham University in Tarrytown, New York, and theology from Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
After ministering as a clinical social worker at Harvard Medical Associates in Boston, Massachusetts, Thorpe Family Residence in the Bronx, New York for five years, and Bethel Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Croton-on-Hudson, New York, for six years she transitioned to hospital chaplaincy. She served as the director of mission services for five years and director of pastoral care at Bon Secours Charity Health System in Suffern, New York. In more recent years, Sister Madeline was a volunteer chaplain at Montefiore Nyack Hospital, in Nyack, New York, for the past five years.
She enthusiastically embraced the healing ministry of direct patient care as a hospital chaplain. Patients and family members experienced great compassion in her presence.
