Age 90
Inspired by her motto, “Thy will be done,” Sister Loretta spent her life doing God’s will abundantly.
At the age of 18, she entered the Detroit Province of the Sisters of Mercy. She earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Mercy College in Detroit, Michigan, and a master’s degree in mathematics from the University of Detroit.
For over 30 years, she taught mathematics in the Saginaw and Detroit dioceses at the elementary, high school and college levels. She was a math and science professor for over 25 years at the University of Detroit Mercy where she was named Science Teacher of the Year in 2002.
Sister Loretta also served as an income tax wizard for the community when working in the business office of the Provincialate in Farmington Hills, Michigan. She was never willing to pay a tax bill she thought was incorrect. Sister Loretta did her tax research and always prevailed.
In addition to her formal ministries, Sister Loretta cared for her mother for many years and also befriended other elderly people in her apartment complex, taking them to church and bringing homemade baked goods. A teacher, a devoted daughter and friend to many, a talented cook and baker, Sister Loretta’s kindness will be well remembered as well as her feisty Irish wit.
