Age 83
Sister Janet Korn was a Sister of Mercy for 65 years. She entered the Sisters of Mercy from Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish shortly after graduating from Our Lady of Mercy High School in 1956. After teaching at St. Thomas the Apostle, Rochester, and Our Lady of Lourdes, Elmira, New York, she became a missionary in Santiago, Chile. After nine years in Chile, she returned to the U.S.A. to study at Nazareth College. Receiving a Bachelor of Art in history, she returned to Chile for six more years.
After spending 15 years in Chile, Sister Janet returned to Rochester, New York, to serve on the executive council of the Sisters of Mercy. She became director of the Mercy Associates and was actively involved in New Membership. She served as the social justice coordinator for the Diocese of Rochester and the community from 1999 to 2022. Sister Janet spearheaded efforts and led the development of La Casa, a temporary home for migrant workers in Sodus, New York. She established Melita House in Rochester, a residence for unwed mothers, and worked tirelessly to reestablish and guide St. Michael’s Woodshop, a ministry reaching out to inner city teens in Rochester. Sister Janet was active with a national group concerned with establishing and conducting programs for returning missionaries. She became chairperson of the Homelessness & Housing Task Force, initiated by the Sisters of Mercy, and was named the director of Catherine McAuley Housing.
