Age 88
Sister Mary Clare Dougherty was a Sister of Mercy for 71 years. She was born in Kingston, Pennsylvania, and raised in the East End section of Wilkes-Barre. She was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School; College Misericordia where she received a Bachelor of Science in English; and the University of Scranton, where she received a Master of Science in Secondary Education. Sister Mary Clare also spent many summers studying at Catholic University, Washington, DC.
Sister Mary Clare taught in the Diocese of Scranton at Holy Savior School, St. Aloysius School, and St. John’s School in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania; she also taught at St. Gabriel’s, Hazleton, Pennsylvania, and at Honesdale Catholic School. In addition, she served in the Allentown diocese as Principal of Holy Family School, New Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and in the Brooklyn diocese as Principal of St. Boniface, Sea Cliff, New York. As a gifted teacher, she also offered music and religious education to a wide range of students from Kindergarten through High School. Sister Mary Clare was instrumental in the development and implementation of Mercy Institute of Education (MIED), a program providing individual tutoring for students of all ages.
