Story is a powerful way to engage us in empathetic listening. We deepen our understanding of those who suffer suppression and oppression in ways often unknown to us. Stories touch into our own history of joy or sorrow, of triumph or trauma. The sharing of stories changes hearts, minds, and builds relationships.
That is especially important at a time when political upheaval is uprooting DEI programs and erasing histories of oppression and violence. Cornerstones: Sacred Stories of LGBTQ+ Employees in Catholic Institutions, edited by Ish Ruiz and Mark Guevarra and published last year by New Ways Ministry, is an anthology of personal narratives. In these unprecedented times, this book brings the perspective and experience of Catholic school and parish LGBTQ+ employees who either were removed from their beloved ministry or who were supported to continue.
Each story is followed by questions for reflection and hopefully, conversation.

“We are made in the image and likeness of God” – what does this statement of faith mean in light of these stories?
How many of us have changed our perspective through coming to know and love persons who identify as LGBTQ+?
How has our own understanding of sex, sexuality and gender identity challenged harmful labels such as “intrinsically disordered”?
When Jesus teaches “love one another as I have loved you,” what does this mean?
How many of us have a family member, friend, colleague or community member who has been hurt or marginalized by our communities or church?
What does this say about the Church’s theme that all are welcome?
Not easy questions. No easy answers.
This anthology will assist us in the hard and complex work of deep listening and dialog with others to build bridges of understanding, inclusion and relationship – the kin-dom.
