The Sisters of Mercy of the Americas launched an initiative, called Vote with Mercy, to encourage U.S. citizens to vote in the November elections and to consider a variety of factors and values in determining their decision.
In the divided political climate in the United States, so often characterized by rancor and acrimony, the Sisters of Mercy seek to invite thoughtful participation in the upcoming elections and to call on voters to pause and reflect on a range of important issues. “Am I humble enough,” Pope Francis once asked, “to hear the opinions of others so as to choose the best way of governing?” (Morning Meditation, Sept. 16, 2013)
“As people of faith, we are called to witness for others. As Sisters of Mercy, that witness is expressed throughout Catholic teaching and in our Critical Concerns of immigration, nonviolence, care for our Earth, racism, and the education, health and spiritual needs of women and girls,” said Sister of Mercy Rose Martin.
A centerpiece of the initiative is a video highlighting these concerns, available on the Sisters of Mercy website and social media platforms, and featured in advertising. The video is available to view here.
In addition to other materials available to help voters discern, notably Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship created by U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, the Sisters of Mercy are offering faith-filled perspectives on issues concerning those in need, systemic and enduring injustices, and care for our common home. Those resources are available on our All Things Election 2024 site.
In the words of Pope Francis: “We need to participate for the common good.” (ibid.)
